Two college football bowl games with ties to the city of Boston have been canceled due to COVID-19 complications.The inaugural Wasabi Fenway Bowl at Fenway Park and all associated activities with the game were canceled Sunday.One of the participants, the University of Virginia, was no longer able to participate in the game due to the number of COVID-19 cases impacting its roster, preventing safe participation in the game.UVA was set to face Southern Methodist University at 11 a.m. Wednesday in what was set to be the first college football bowl game to be played at Fenway Park, the historic home of the Boston Red Sox.The baseball field at Fenway had been converted into a football gridiron when Sky5 flew over the ballpark on Dec. 15, two weeks before the game.”Though we are all disappointed that the Wasabi Fenway Bowl will not be played this year, we are grateful to our community partners, sponsors, volunteers and stakeholders for their hard work to introduce college bowl season to Fenway Park,” reads a statement shared by organizers on social media. “We’d like to extend that appreciation to both schools and fanbases for their enthusiastic support. We look forward to seeing everyone at the 2022 Wasabi Fenway Bowl.”In addition, the Boston College football team had its bowl game, the 2021 Military Bowl, canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.BC’s director of athletics Pat Kraft said in a statement that the Eagles do not have enough players to field a team due to rising COVID-19 cases within the program, season-ending injuries, opt outs and transfers.According to Kraft and head football coach Jeff Hafley, Boston College had over 40 players unavailable to play in the Military Bowl against East Carolina University. The game was scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Monday in Annapolis, Maryland — the home of the U.S. Naval Academy.”We are disappointed not to be able to finish the season together as a team, but the health and safety of our program is our highest priority,” Kraft said in his statement. “Steve Beck and his Military Bowl staff put on a great week for our team and we are thankful for everything they did to make us feel at home during our stay in Washington, D.C.””This is not the way we wanted to see this season come to an end,” Hafley said in a statement. “We just do not have enough players to safely play a game. My heart goes out to our seniors who will not have one final opportunity to wear a BC jersey and I can’t thank them enough for all the contributions they made to our program.”Ticket refunds for the 2021 Wasabi Fenway Bowl will automatically be posted to the payment card used for purchase within the next 14 business days.Fans who purchased tickets for the 2021 Military Bowl through the Boston College ticket office will be refunded on the original credit card used for purchase. Refunds should appear within five to seven business days.
