CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — North Carolina secured its first victory of the 2020-21 college basketball season over College of Charleston, 79-60, on Wednesday night.
The Cougars battled back from a 14-point deficit and took the lead, 43-42, with 15 minutes to play. UNC’s size down low and impressive play from its young freshmen proved too much, however, as the Tar Heels went on a 17-0 run to take the lead and put the season-opener away.
Caleb Love and R.J. Davis became the first pair of freshman guards to start a game for UNC since Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington did so back in 2007. Love led all scorers with 17 points. He shot 4-for-11 from the floor and 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Davis added 11 points on 4-for-9 shooting.
The freshmen took the stage by outscoring the returning Tar Heels, 50-29. Day’Ron Sharpe notched a double-double with 13 point and 10 rebounds, five of which were offensive boards. Garrison Brooks had a low-scoring night (six points) but contributed with his defense (two blocks) and rebounding (team-high 11 rebounds).
