The Cheapskate Show podcast: AirPods Max definitely aren’t worth the money – CNET

David Carnoy/CNET

Last week 2020 took another turn for the worse, with Apple’s launch of the AirPods Max, a set of $549 headphones. To be sure, they sound good — CNET’s own audio expert David Carnoy was impressed by their sound quality and noise cancellation. But they’re priced well beyond their value, at least in my humble opinion, and any number of alternative headsets will serve you just as well for a lot less money. And that’s what’s on the agenda in this week’s episode — why you should avoid spending your kid’s college fund on a pair of AirPods Max.

That’s not all. We believe in giving you your money’s worth in this free podcast, so we also have one last set of last-minute holiday gifts. These are a little goofy, so let us know what you think about them.

Also, a public service announcement: As we mentioned last week, we’ll be taking the last two weeks of December off, so enjoy your holidays. Stay safe, stay healthy and stay cheap. And listen for our return in season 2 of the Cheapskate Show on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021.
