The Giants were unable to sweep the New York Mets in San Francisco last week, but on Thursday at Citi Field, they made sure they didn’t fail a second time.
Darin Ruf delivered an RBI single to right field to score Mike Yastrzemski in the eighth inning to lift the Giants to a nail-biting 3-2 win in the series finale in Queens, NY.
Alex Wood got the start for the Giants and allowed six hits and two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. He also walked two and struck out five.
Jarlin Garcia, Dominic Leone, Jose Alvarez and Tyler Rogers pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief to preserve the 83rd win of the season for the Giants. Rogers picked up his 12th save of the season.
Trade deadline acquisition Kris Bryant got the scoring started Thursday with a booming two-run homer in the first inning, his sixth with the Giants and 24th of the season.
By completing the three-game sweep of the Mets, the Giants now have won five in a row as they head to Atlanta for pivotal series against the NL East-leading Braves.

The win wasn’t smooth sailing for the Giants, though. Catcher Curt Casali left with an apparent injury on Ruf’s RBI single in the eighth. Buster Posey is dealing with left knee discomfort, so Chadwick Tromp was recalled earlier in the day and finished the game in place of Casali.
Top prospect Joey Bart is on the 7-day Injured List at Triple-A Sacramento, so the Giants have to be hoping Casali isn’t seriously hurt or that a few days of rest did Posey’s knee a lot of good.
For now, it’s a happy flight to Atlanta for the Giants after sweeping the struggling Mets in New York.
