No. 12 Notre Dame leads No. 18 Wisconsin 10-3 at halftime of a game that’s been an offensive struggle for both teams. Notre Dame’s defense has stifled the Wisconsin offense, holding the Badgers to only 88 yards in the first half. The Fighting Irish have taken away the Wisconsin rushing attack, holding the Badgers to 17 yards rushing on 11 carries while daring quarterback Graham Mertz to beat them.
Spoiler alert: He hasn’t shown that he can. Mertz has completed only 5 of 13 passes for 71 yards with an interception. That’s not to say Notre Dame QB Jack Coan has blown the competition away himself. Coan has completed 14 of 25 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown … but he’s also been sacked five times. The difference is one of Coan’s 14 completions was a 31-yard connection with Kevin Austin for a score that was probably a little lucky to survive a replay review.
