Tuesday, Nov. 2: Pittsburgh Steelers trade edge defender Melvin Ingram to Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs acquired Ingram for a sixth-round pick.
Why the Steelers made the deal: They signed Ingram to a one-year deal in the offseason, but his role has been reduced with T.J. Watt getting healthy and Alex Highsmith performing well.
NFL Network reported recently that Ingram was unhappy with his reduced role and wanted to be moved. After he played 35 snaps or more in each of the Steelers’ first five games, Ingram played 17 snaps in Week 6. The team listed him with a groin injury in Week 8 and he was inactive.
Ingram is 32 and does not figure into the Steelers’ future. Ideally, they could have kept him as a depth or rotational option. They are trying to win this year and are a better team with Ingram than without him. But given that he wanted to be on the field more, the Steelers decided it would be easier to move on. That’s reasonable.
Steelers grade: C+
Why the Chiefs made the deal: They need pass-rush help. The Chiefs rank 31st in sack rate (4 percent) and 31st in pressure rate (21.2 percent).
