Netflix Assassin’s Creed live-action series is in the works – CNET

Assassin’s Creed has found a home on Netflix.

Ubisoft

With Assassin’s Creed Valhalla‘s release mere weeks away, Netflix revealed it’s working with developer Ubisoft on an “epic, genre-bending” live-action adaptation of the historical game series. It tweeted a red Netflix version of the games’ assassin logo on Tuesday.

“Netflix + Assassin’s Creed,” it wrote. “Netflix will be developing an Assassin’s Creed live-action series. Ubisoft’s Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik will serve as Executive Producers.”

Along with the live-action show, it’ll also produce animated and anime series based on the games, as previously noted by CNET sister site GameSpot. Since the games take place in various points in history — the 2007 original brought us to the Third Crusade in 1191 and Valhalla puts you in the role of a Viking in 873 — it’s possible that each series will happen in different eras.

“For more than 10 years, millions of fans around the world have helped shape the Assassin’s Creed brand into an iconic franchise,” Jason Altman, head of Ubisoft Film and Television, said in a release. “We’re thrilled to create an Assassin’s Creed series with Netflix and we look forward to developing the next saga in the Assassin’s Creed universe.”

Assassin’s Creed was already adapted into a movie back in 2016, but that proved utterly forgettable despite the presence of Michael Fassbender in the main role. There have also been a few short movies — Lineage and Embers — that filled out the story between games.

On the game side, Valhalla will launch on Nov. 10 — the same day as the Xbox Series X and two days before the PS5. Along with those versions, it’ll be available on PS4, Xbox One and PC. If you get it for the current gen consoles, you’ll able to upgrade to the next-gen version for free.
