National Geographic Media Scholarship Recipients Announced at Celebration Bowl

At Saturday’s Celebration Bowl in Atlanta, National Geographic announced the inaugural recipients of the National Geographic Media Scholarship. Four students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were each selected to receive a $10,000 scholarship along with the opportunity to participate in a unique two-week immersion program at National Geographic’s headquarters in Washington, DC.

National Geographic has been deploying the power of storytelling to inspire a spirit of adventure, desire to explore, and a passion for the planet for 134 years. In keeping with Nat Geo’s ongoing commitment to elevating and supporting Black storytellers, the National Geographic Media Scholarship was created for HBCU students to join the next generation of storytellers.

“It was a really moving experience to review the applications we received from HBCU students across the country who expressed what National Geographic means to them,” said Karen Greenfield, National Geographic’s Senior Vice President of Content Planning & Operations. “As the Chair of National Geographic’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Team, I am so proud to see this program come to life and believe it will be a valuable addition to our efforts to identify, cultivate, and elevate diverse talent early in their careers. On behalf of all of us at Nat Geo, I congratulate our inaugural recipients and look forward to welcoming them to our headquarters this spring.”

2021 National Geographic Media Scholarship winners:

  • Sherice “Philly” Campbell, a senior at Dillard University majoring in film.
  • Walter Dixson IV, also a senior at Dillard University majoring in theater performance.
  • Garrett Guillard, a junior marine sciences major at Savannah State University.
  • Tori Pearson, a freshman television and film major at Howard University.
