Andrew Bogut, who played 14 seasons in the NBA and most recently suited up for the Golden State Warriors in 2019, has officially retired from professional basketball.
The 36-year-old Australian, who played the past two seasons with the Sydney Kings of the National Basketball League, announced the decision on his podcast, Rogue Bogues.
“I would’ve made this decision earlier if it wasn’t for the postponement of the Olympics,” Bogut said. “I was hoping to get to the 2020 Tokyo Games … but it’s just not meant to be. I cannot — physically and mentally — get to 2021 with the way the body’s been.”
Bogut has appeared in three Olympic Games for Australia, beginning in Athens in 2004. In 2016, he helped lead Australia to a fourth-place finish, tied for its best showing ever.
In the NBA, Bogut played for five teams, most notably with the Milwaukee Bucks, who drafted him first overall in 2005 and saw him earn all-rookie team honours. Later in his Milwaukee tenure, Bogut became a single-season block leader and third team all-NBA nominee.
He won the 2015 NBA Finals with the Golden State Warriors, starting 18 of 19 games that season.
But his final three NBA seasons were mired by injuries, including an instance where he broke his leg in his first minute of game action as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2017. Bogut appeared in just 62 games over his final three seasons.
“I thank everyone that supported me throughout my career,” Bogut said. “All the teams, especially the Sydney Kings of the NBL, the national team and then the countless amount of teams I’ve played for in the NBA.
“It’s been a great journey that’s formed me and made me into the person that I am.”
