A Labrador town has said thanks but no thanks to the offer of an Ontario nurse to backfill for a local nurse who’s on leave.
St. Lewis Mayor Helen Poole says when residents learned that the nurse would be coming from outside the region, there was a lot of concern.
She says word spread quickly, leading to many calls to the town office from people who were against the idea.
Poole says there’s no doubt the reaction had a lot to do with the recent case of a Saskatchewan worker who failed to self-isolate after arriving in Goose Bay and later tested positive for COVID-19.
Meanwhile, Public Health officials are still conducting their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the activities of a healthcare worker in Labrador.
The worker from Saskatchewan tested positive for the virus, prompting Labrador Grenfell-Health to issue broad notices for testing, including two stores in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
Speaking at yesterday’s COVID-19 briefing, Health Minister John Haggie noted that the investigation has not yet been completed.
He says once it is complete, they will be able to determine what consequences, if any, are necessary.
