Four schools closed in Calgary area after COVID outbreaks – Calgary Herald

École de la Rose Sauvage, a public francophone school in Mount Pleasant for grades 7 to 12, sent a letter to parents earlier this week confirming four cases along with a decision to move all classes to online only.

The school is now among 66 public and separate schools in Calgary that have been connected to a case of COVID-19 since the start of the school year in September.

Up to 14 Calgary schools now have outbreaks with two to four reported cases. Three schools, Canyon Meadows, St. Wilfrid Elementary and — added on Tuesday — Nelson Mandela High School are on “watch” alerts, meaning they have five or more cases.

Across Alberta, Support Our Students is reporting 233 schools have so far sent letters home to parents warning of at least one case of COVID since school started.

SOS, which has been closely monitoring COVID outbreaks in schools across Alberta, received a letter confirming the closure of the francophone school from a parent.

“Our thoughts are with the people concerned and we wish them a quick recovery,” said Daniel Thierren, superintendent of the FrancoSud School Board, which oversees French schools in southern Alberta.

“In order to protect students and staff we have made the decision to move to online learning.”

According to the letter, some students are expected to return to in-person learning as early as Oct. 13, with others expected back Oct. 15.

The school, which has about 250 students, has nearly 100 students and staff now in self-isolation.
