Conor McGregor asks UFC to create belt for him; Nate Diaz mocks him in response – Bloody Elbow

As evidenced again by Dustin Poirier passing on a lightweight title bout for a trilogy with Conor McGregor, fights — and especially wins — against the Irish superstar are typically more lucrative than winning the actual UFC belt.

The former two-division champion himself knows this, and he has again asked the UFC to create a McGregor belt for the Poirier bout.

“I feel it’s time to break out this baby for the next fight. I ask the UFC to please create The McGregor belt. I suggest rose gold and rubies. Think patek rare,” McGregor wrote on Twitter. “Or yellow gold and emeralds possibly. Might be nice also. I’m open to design suggestions. Let’s link up @ufc”

The clip included in the tweet was from a UFC 196 pre-fight press conference, where McGregor first broached the idea of having his own belt. It didn’t take long before the man who beat him at that very event issued a mocking response.

The UFC actually created a new “BMF” belt for Diaz’s previous bout with Jorge Masvidal. McGregor and Diaz continued trading insults on social media stemming from that topic.

While Diaz and McGregor have discussed completing a trilogy of their own, they both have tough bouts lined up for them next. McGregor is reportedly having that third bout with Poirier in July, while Diaz is set to face Leon Edwards at welterweight, and will make history as the UFC’s first five-round co-main event this May.

As for the actual UFC lightweight title bout, that will happen on the same card as Diaz vs Edwards, with Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler fighting for the vacant belt at UFC 262.
