The Buffalo Bills have not had an MVP since Thurman Thomas walked away with the award in 1991.
There’s plenty of football left to be played in 2020, but could this be the year that another Bills player claims the hardware? Time will tell, but Bills QB Josh Allen has won FOX Sports’ midseason MVP award. FOX Sports announced Allen as the winner on Saturday night.
Of course, the Bills Mafia played a big role in Allen walking away with the award. Buffalo’s quarterback was listed in a FOX Sports poll along with Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson, Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers.
At the end of the voting, Allen claimed 40.1 percent of the vote. The next closest was Wilson, the quarterback Allen outdueled in Week 9, who had 22.5 percent of the vote. Mahomes claimed 19.2 percent of the poll while Rodgers claimed 18.2 percent of the vote.
Through nine games, Allen is on pace to shatter his career-highs as a passer. Perhaps the most jaw dropping stat for Allen is his completion percentage thus far. In nine games, Allen has completed 68.9 percent of his passes. His previous career-high was 58.8. The addition of Stefon Diggs to a wide receiver room that already featured John Brown and Cole Beasley has significantly helped Allen in year three.
In addition to his completion percentage, Allen has 2,587 yards passing, 19 touchdowns and five interceptions. He needs under 500 yards and just two passing touchdowns to set a new career-highs in those categories. In addition to his feats this season as a passer, Allen also has 241 yards and five touchdowns rushing.
Buffalo will need an MVP type effort out of Allen on Sunday when Buffalo takes on the Arizona Cardinals. Buffalo’s secondary will be shorthanded in the game after Josh Norman tested positive for COVID-19. In addition to losing Norman, No. 2 cornerback Levi Wallace and reserve safety Dean Marlowe were added to the COVID/Reserve list for being in close contact with Norman. Kyler Murray will likely test Buffalo’s secondary depth considering the losses so Allen will need to do his part against Arizona’s defense.
