CLEVELAND, Ohio — Baker Mayfield underwent an MRI on Monday on his injured left shoulder Monday, but it showed no structural damage, a league source told cleveland.com.
That’s an enormous relief for the Browns, who got a scare during Sunday’s 31-21 victory over the Texans when the quarterback’s left arm was hanging briefly by his side, and he winced in pain on the field.
“He’s sore,’’ coach Kevin Stefanski said. “He’s doing fine.’’
Mayfield acknowledged that the shoulder “kind of popped in and popped out. Nothing too serious.’’
He admitted it hurt for the rest of the game after he injured it with 9:44 left in the half. He briefly jogged to the locker room possibly to pop the shoulder back in place, but ran back out almost immediately. Case Keenum warmed up on the sideline, but there was no way Mayfield was coming out.
“I was feeling it a lot – thanks for asking,’’ he said, to draw laughter. “It was all right. Played the rest of the game, didn’t we?”
He got some advice Monday from teammate Kareem Hunt after injuring the shoulder trying to tackle Justin Reid, who picked Mayfield off when rookie receiver Anthony Schwartz stopped abruptly on his route.
“Honestly, I was nervous,’’ Hunt said. “I told him, ‘Let me tackle him next time.’ It was definitely a shocker. I wanted to help him off of the field. It would have been a big moment. Case was getting ready, and he’s a great quarterback, too. It would have been another tough loss if that would have happened, but I am surprised he came back really quickly and I am glad.”
Mayfield said of Reid, “I think he realized it was me standing right there so he put his head down and ran right after me.’’
He may or may not be a little limited in practice this week, but as he noted Sunday “It’s my left, though. God gave me two.’’
Grant Delpit grateful to be back
Delpit was happy to make his NFL debut Sunday after sitting out all last season with his ruptured Achilles tendon, an injury that claims the career of about 26% of the NFL players who suffer it.
He made an impact right away, recording five tackles, a sack-fumble of Davis Mills, and a near interception.
“It felt great being out there,’’ he said. “It felt good. It had been a little minute since I last suited up and stepped out there. I am glad I was able to be out there for my team and just blessed by God really. It has been a long journey. I am glad that it has started like it has. Hopefully, we keep it going through the season.”
He felt the support of the fans at FirstEnergy Stadium.
“I love the Dawg Pound, man,’’ he said. “Thank you all for the support. Seeing me back out there, I know a lot of you all were waiting on it. For us getting the win for our first home game, it’s beautiful. Thank you all for the support. It was crazy out there. Hopefully we can keep it going.’’
Delpit acknowledged it was tough coming back from the Achilles only to suffer a hamstring injury that sidelined him most of training camp.
“It was definitely aggravating with the hamstring,’’ he said. “The Achilles was what it was. That was a long process. With the hamstring, it was on the same leg. It was definitely aggravating, but the training staff got me right. They helped me Week 1 a lot. I definitely wanted to play, but they wanted to just make sure that I was completely fine, which turned out to be the best decision. I am glad for everybody who has helped get me where I am. Hopefully, we just stay healthy this season and continue on this track that we are on.”

Denzel Ward will try to rebound from a rough day
Ward will work hard to come back from one of his worst career games against the Texans, during which he gave up three passes on Tyrod Taylor’s opening touchdown drive, and five of six targets overall. Ward was ranked 18th out of 19 Browns defenders by Pro Football Focus with a 45.4 grade. The only one lower was safety John Johnson III, who earned a 42.4 mark.
Taylor and his replacement Mills earned a 118.8 rating when targeting Ward, which is out of character for him.
“I would tell you some good moments and some moments I’m sure he wants back,’’ Stefanski said. “I know I can already see him working the technique that he’s going to work this week and drill down on it. You go against some pretty good wide receivers. They’re going to make a play here and there, and it’s really how you respond. Some good moments and definitely some moments that he’s going to work real hard on this week.”
Demetric Felton earns a larger role and help ease the loss of Jarvis Landry
Felton, the Browns’ sixth-round pick out of UCLA, caught only two passes, but made them count. The first was his spinning, rumbling 33-yard touchdown, and the second was an 18-yarder in the second half. Felton will assume some of Landry’s slot duties, and help ease the absence of Landry over likely the next several weeks.
“We are excited about Demetric,’’ Stefanski said. “Obviously, we were excited to add him in the sixth round of the draft. He has worked really hard throughout the spring and summer. As you guys have seen, he has been in the running back room and in the wide receiver room.
“These are the type of things you do with rookies and grow their role based on what they ready to handle. He obviously made a great play for us on that screen and had great individual effort. He has made plays as a returner. It is our jobs to grow their roles. Really, the truth is these guys earn their roles. I think Demetric is doing that.”
