A pair of teams that are out of the playoff picture will face off on Sunday afternoon when Los Angeles hosts Atlanta. The Chargers are coming off their worst performance of the season—a 45-0 blowout at home against New England. Atlanta was unable to build on its win against Las Vegas, losing to New Orleans for the second time in three weeks.
Falcons without Jones
Atlanta had won four out of its six games since opening the season on a five-game losing skid, but it was unable to grab the win against New Orleans last week. The Saints have accounted for two of the Falcons’ three losses since the early-season losing streak. Atlanta picked up a 43-6 blowout win against Las Vegas in between. The Falcons have been a pretty solid offensive team this season, averaging 371.3 yards per game. They will be facing a Los Angeles defense that ranks No. 9 in the NFL, allowing 338.6 yards per contest.

The offense might take a hit on Sunday, though, as star wide receiver Julio Jones has been ruled out with a hamstring injury. Jones has been dinged up throughout the season, but he has been a big weapon when he has been able to play. Quarterback Matt Ryan has completed 63.5 percent of his passes this season, bringing an 18-to-8 touchdown-to-interception ratio into this game. Running back Todd Gurley II has rushed for 626 yards and nine touchdowns, but he is only averaging 3.6 yards per carry. Calvin Ridley has caught a team-high 59 passes for 905 yards and seven touchdowns. He will be an even bigger focus in this game with Jones (771 yards) sidelined.
Herbert needing to bounce back
Los Angeles has only notched one win in its last five games. That win came against the Jets, the NFL’s sole winless team. The Chargers are coming off what was their worst outing of the season, losing to New England in a 45-0 blowout. It was the most lopsided loss in franchise history. Despite having a rookie quarterback, the offense has been solid this season. The Chargers are averaging 386.2 yards per game, which is good for No. 7 in the NFL. They will be facing an Atlanta defense that has struggled, ranking No. 27 in the league. The Falcons are giving up 394.4 yards per game.

Quarterback Justin Herbert is coming off two of his worst outings of the season. He has thrown just one touchdown pass while being intercepted three times in losses to Buffalo and New England. Herbert has completed just 54.3 percent of his passes over those two games. However, he is still a heavy favorite to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year award. The rushing attack has not been a strong suit. Leading rusher Joshua Kelley is listed as questionable for this game with an ankle injury. Veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen leads the team with 90 receptions for 923 yards and seven touchdowns. Mike Williams has added 36 catches for 572 yards.
